WOW Factor for Men

(www.mensgroup.org – “Original Study”)

Description:
We will review what it means to worship God every day. We will challenge men to expand their understanding and actions of worship for their own lives.

Message from Marsh: “Most men do not sing in church. They’ll stand next to their wife and children, but not a word will come out of their mouths. Whatever the reason, it begs the question, how and when do men worship God? Worship should be a part of every believer’s expression of their faith. Men, there is something in this chapter for you.”

Lesson 4 - Noah Worshipped God

STARTING PRAYER: A suggested opening prayer for small group members or individuals to invite God to connect as we seek Him in His Word. Feel free to add your own words, “in prayer.”

Heavenly Father, we want to learn how to worship You better. We want to express how thankful we are that You sent your Son to save us and honor You as our Father. Challenge us in this lesson to a more vibrant life of worship.

OPENING QUESTIONS:

1.      How important is worship to you?

2.      How would you define worship?

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE:

So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds-everything that moves on land—came out of the ark, one kind after another. Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease (Genesis 8:18-22).

LESSON:

Noah’s first action when he and his family emerged from the ark after the flood waters receded was to build an altar to the Lord and offered burnt sacrifices. It was not made from finely cut stones, but stones in their natural condition. At this altar, Noah worshipped God.

Think about this. All that Noah had known was now gone. He and family were the only survivors of earth’s cataclysmic event. His three sons and their wives would create a new human race. There was no time to gloat. It was a time to be thankful and reverential toward the one who allowed all this to happen, including his family’s preservation.

Worship and sacrifice examples in Scripture are limited. 1,500 years before Noah built his altar, Cain and Abel both offered a sacrifice. Abel’s the blood sacrifice of a lamb approved by God, and Cain’s offering of fruits/vegetables from his garden, the work of his hands, not approved by God.

God made it easy for Noah to worship through sacrifice. He gave him seven pairs of sacrificial animals rather than just one pair, like the rest of the animals in the ark. However, Noah showed that he was dedicated to God because, as soon as he emerged, he built this altar and worshipped Him with sacrifices.

This was a great testimony to his family standing as a marker to the end of judgment on the whole earth. Noah recognized God’s authority and power, and His ability to bring judgment on all who sinned. He did not want to experience His wrath. Out of respect for what He did, Noah worshipped Him in a way that was natural and purifying. Noah was beginning a new culture which would recognize God’s preeminence overall. He was identified as the one responsible for them and the One before whom they should be responsible. God was central once again and worship was given a dominant place in the family’s life.

His willingness to be righteous amid a sinful world was clear in the three important activities he engaged in to be close to God. These include Noah’s Walk with God, his obedience to build the ark as God said, and now his worship of God.

A simple definition of worship is, we worship God for Who He is, what He does, and what He is going to do. God’s character is described in the Bible, especially revealed in Revelation, chapters 4-5. He is powerful, the almighty, seated on a throne, holy, and eternal. What God does is create, love, connect with, and judge us. He is going to do this and keep doing what He has always done, care for this world, make it a home for us, and to be with us.

Every day of our life should include time to worship God. We can build figurative altars of worship in our lives. Our worship can be in church but also in our car, or in many other places.

We must expand our understanding of the words used to worship God in Scripture. These include prayer, thanksgiving, worship, adoration, and praise. Prayer is walking with God, two-way communication, accepting His will, not ours, and trust in Him. Thanksgiving is gratefulness of the heart for our relationship with God and what He is doing in our life. Worship is honor and reverence to God. Adoration and praise reflect all the attributes and the nature of God.

Paul writes in Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16, three ways to worship God through singing: psalms, which are biblical verse set to music; hymns, songs of praise to Christ and God the Father; and spiritual songs, which are testimonies of what God and Christ have done for you. These help us broaden our worship of God.

Each of us should determine what God means to us and what He has done for us and that should lead us to worship Him in ways illustrated in Scripture and ways that reverence and honor Him. This is the third powerful action that Noah did in the WOW factor—he worshipped God. This should be personal, but also, as Noah illustrates, in front of your family. Your wife and children, and even extended family, should see you as a worshipper of God.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1.      What do you think about worship of God?

 2.      How has your life incorporated worship of God?

3.      How has Noah’s life helped you to understand the challenge of worshipping God?

APPLICATION:

1.      Based on the lesson, how could you deepen your worship experience with God?

2.      What is a part of the worship of God that you have never done before but want to do?

 CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, we desire a more vibrant life of worship for you. Help us expand and deepen all that worship can be and help us live it out daily to Your glory.
