Part I

Introduction

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? How will you be remembered after you're gone? These are important questions to reflect on as we consider how to live a life that honors God and makes a lasting impact on the world around us. In this Bible study, we'll explore what it means to leave a godly legacy and practical ways we can pursue that in our own lives.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we gather to study your Word, we ask that you would open our hearts and minds to understand what it means to leave a legacy that pleases you. Help us to see the importance of living with intentionality and purpose, investing in people and eternal things. Speak to us through this time together and challenge us to live in a way that makes a difference for your kingdom. In Jesus' name, amen.

Main Lesson

The Importance of Legacy

The Bible places a high value on leaving a legacy. We see examples throughout Scripture of people who lived with a long-term perspective, seeking to make an impact that would outlive them. In Psalm 78, the psalmist writes: "He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments" (Psalm 78:5-7). This passage highlights the importance of passing on faith and godly values to future generations. Our lives should be lived in such a way that we leave behind a legacy of faith, wisdom, and obedience to God that continues to impact people long after we're gone.

What Makes a Godly Legacy?

So what exactly does it look like to leave a godly legacy? There are a few key components:

Loving and obeying God with all your heart. A legacy begins with your own relationship with the Lord. Psalm 112:1-2 says, "Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed." When you walk closely with God and make obedience to him your top priority, it positions you to leave a powerful legacy.
Investing in people. Legacy is about more than just the things you accomplish or the possessions you leave behind. It's about the lives you touch and the people you invest in. The apostle Paul exhorted Timothy to "entrust [the gospel] to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:2). Pouring into others and passing on what you've learned is a key part of leaving a lasting legacy.
Living with integrity and character. The kind of legacy you leave is directly tied to the kind of person you are. Proverbs 20:7 says, "The righteous who walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him." When you live with honesty, purity, and godly character, it provides a solid foundation for the legacy you pass on.
Focusing on eternal things. It's easy to get caught up in the temporary things of this world and lose sight of what really matters. But Jesus challenges us to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:20). Investing in God's kingdom and the things that will last forever is a key part of leaving a godly legacy.

Examples of Godly Legacy

The Bible gives us many examples of people who left behind powerful legacies:

Abraham - Through his faith and obedience, Abraham became the father of many nations and a blessing to all peoples (Genesis 12:2-3).
Moses - Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and gave them God's law, which would shape their identity and relationship with God for generations to come.
David - Despite his failures, David was remembered as a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22) who established an eternal kingdom through his descendant, Jesus Christ.
Paul - The apostle Paul poured his life into training up leaders like Timothy and Titus who would continue the work of spreading the gospel after he was gone.

These men weren't perfect, but they were passionate about loving God, investing in people, living with integrity, and focusing on eternal things. And their legacies lived on long after they were gone.

What do you think it means to leave a godly legacy? What are some key components of a legacy that honors God?
Who are some people in your life who have left a positive legacy? What was it about their lives that made an impact on you?
What are some practical ways you can invest in people and pour into the next generation? How can you be intentional about passing on your faith and values?

Application

Legacy is about more than just the things you accomplish or the possessions you leave behind. It's about the lives you touch and the people you invest in. As you think about the legacy you want to leave, consider these questions:

What kind of person do you want to be remembered as? What character qualities do you want to be known for?
Who are the key people in your life that you want to invest in and pour into? How can you be more intentional about mentoring and discipling others?
What are some practical steps you can take to grow in your relationship with God and make obedience to him your top priority? How can you keep an eternal perspective?
What areas of your life do you need to address in order to live with more integrity and honor God in all you do? What changes do you need to make?
How can you make a difference in the world around you and invest in things that will last forever? What causes or ministries is God calling you to support or get involved in?

Remember, the legacy you leave is not just about what happens after you're gone. It's about the life you live each day. As you pursue God, invest in people, live with integrity, and focus on eternal things, you'll be laying the foundation for a legacy that will outlive you and continue to impact the world for generations to come.

Father, we thank you for the privilege of being able to leave a legacy that honors you. Help us to live with intentionality and purpose, investing in people and eternal things. Give us the courage to address areas of our lives that need to change so that we can live with more integrity. We all desire to leave a mark on this world - to be remembered for something meaningful after we're gone. But what does it mean to leave a truly lasting, godly legacy? In this study, we'll examine the life of Jesus Christ, the ultimate example of a legacy-maker, and explore how we can apply His teachings to our own lives.

Main Lesson

The Foundation of Legacy: Loving God

Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30). This all-encompassing love for God is the foundation for leaving a godly legacy. When we prioritize our relationship with God above all else, it shapes every aspect of our lives and influences those around us.

The Heart of Legacy: Humility and Service

Philippians 2:5-8 describes how Jesus, despite being equal with God, took on the form of a servant and humbled Himself. This example of selflessness and humility is key to leaving a lasting legacy. True greatness, according to Jesus, is found in serving others (Matthew 23:11-12).

The Impact of Legacy: Loving Others

The second greatest commandment, according to Jesus, is to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). Our legacy is built through our relationships and how we treat others. This involves bearing one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), showing hospitality (1 Peter 4:9), and consistently doing good to all people (Galatians 6:10).

The Sacrifice of Legacy: Denying Self

Jesus taught that following Him requires denying ourselves and taking up our cross daily (Matthew 16:24-25). Leaving a godly legacy often involves sacrifice - putting God's will and the needs of others before our own desires and comfort.

The Eternal Perspective of Legacy

While we live on earth, our focus should be on storing up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). A truly lasting legacy is one that has eternal significance, not just temporary earthly impact.

Paul's life demonstrates that God can use anyone, regardless of their past. Gideon's story is one of transformation - from a fearful man hiding in a winepress to a mighty warrior leading an army to victory. Through his journey, we learn valuable lessons about faith, identity, and how God can use anyone who is willing to trust Him.

Main Lesson

1. God Sees Our True Identity

When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, He called him a "mighty man of valor" (Judges 6:12), despite Gideon's current state of fear and hiding. This teaches us that God sees us not as we are, but as we can be through His power.

2. Overcoming Fear and Insecurity

Gideon's initial response to God's call was filled with doubt and excuses (Judges 6:15). Yet God patiently worked with him, providing signs and reassurance. This reminds us that God meets us where we are and helps us grow in faith.

3. The Importance of Obedience

Before leading an army, Gideon had to first obey God in his personal life by tearing down his father's altar to Baal (Judges 6:25-27). This teaches us that private faithfulness precedes public usefulness.

4. God's Power, Not Our Own

God reduced Gideon's army from 32,000 to 300 men to demonstrate that victory comes through His power, not human strength (Judges 7:2-7). This challenges us to rely on God's strength rather than our own abilities.

5. Leaving a Legacy of Faith

Gideon's transformation from a fearful man to a leader mentioned in Hebrews 11's "Hall of Faith" shows us that anyone can leave a legacy of faith when they trust and obey God.

Though he was not a contractor, builder, or military officer, Nehemiah answered God's call to lead the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls. His example teaches us valuable lessons about leadership, prayer, and leaving a legacy that honors God.

Main Lesson

1. A Heart for God's Concerns

Nehemiah demonstrated a deep concern for God's people and the state of Jerusalem, despite living comfortably in the Persian palace. This teaches us that to leave a legacy, we must care about the things that matter to God.

2. The Power of Prayer

Nehemiah's first response to the distressing news about Jerusalem was to pray. He spent four months in prayer before taking action, showing us the importance of seeking God's guidance before making major decisions.

3. Taking Responsibility

Nehemiah not only prayed but also took action. He approached the king, made plans, and personally led the rebuilding effort. This reminds us that godly leadership involves both prayer and action.

4. Facing Opposition with Faith

Nehemiah understood the importance of involving others in the work. He rallied the people of Jerusalem to rebuild the walls together, demonstrating that effective leadership often involves inspiring and organizing others toward a common goal.

4. Living as a Blessing

God wants to use us as channels through which His blessings flow to others. Proverbs 3:27 instructs, "Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it." Seek opportunities daily to be a blessing to someone.

5. Pursuing Your Vision with Fervor

Romans 12:11 encourages us to be "fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." This means maintaining a spiritual glow in our work for God. Pursue your God-given vision with passion and determination, like David running toward Goliath.

Discussion Questions

What does it mean to you personally to "make your life count"?
How has your thinking about God's plan for your life expanded or changed over time?
Can you share an experience where asking boldly of God resulted in a blessing for you or others?
What are some practical ways we can be a blessing to others in our daily lives?
How can we maintain a "fervent spirit" in pursuing our calling, especially when facing challenges?

Application

Reflect on your current goals. Are they big enough to require God's help? If not, how can you expand your vision?
Identify one area where you've been hesitant to ask God for more. Write down a bold prayer request and commit to praying it daily this week.
Look for an opportunity each day this week to be a blessing to someone. Keep a journal of these experiences and how they impact you.

Introduction

God has a unique plan and purpose for each of our lives. However, He has also given us free will and the responsibility to make choices that shape our destiny. This study will explore how we can take control of our lives in a way that honors God and leads to the fulfillment of His plans for us.

Main Lesson

1. God's Plan and Our Choices

God has a predestined plan for our lives, but our choices play a crucial role in its fulfillment. Deuteronomy 30:15 reminds us that God sets before us life and death, blessing and cursing. It's our responsibility to choose wisely.

2. The Keys of the Kingdom

In Matthew 16:19, Jesus gives us the keys of the kingdom, granting us authority to bind and loose on earth as it is in heaven. This power comes with great responsibility to align our will with God's.

3. Overcoming Trials

Trials are often preparation for greater heights. As Joseph's story illustrates, God can use our deepest pain as a foundation for future blessings. Faith and perseverance during trials are crucial for controlling our destiny.

4. Making Right Decisions

Proverbs 4:18 encourages us that the path of the just shines brighter unto the perfect day. Our decisions determine our direction and ultimately our destination. We must choose to follow God's guidance.

5. Taking Responsibility

God has given us authority, but He won't force His will upon us. We must take responsibility for our lives, resisting the enemy and speaking to our mountains (Mark 11:23).

How does understanding that we have control over our destiny change your perspective on life's challenges?
In what areas of your life do you need to take more responsibility and make better choices?
How can we discern between God's will and our own desires when making important decisions?
Can you share an experience where a trial led to unexpected blessings or growth in your life?

Application

Identify one area in your life where you need to take more control. What specific action can you take this week to address it?
Reflect on a current challenge you're facing. How might God be using this to prepare you for something greater?
